In the spirit of its namesake Jan Wellem, The Wellem Hotel continues his work as a collector, patron, and mediator of art. Furthermore, its location between the renowned Düsseldorf Art Academy, the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, and the K20 of the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen positions the hotel as a hotspot for culture enthusiasts. An in-house collection of originals and limited editions by world-renowned artists throughout the hotel, changing exhibitions, and its own cultural events all contribute to Düsseldorf’s reputation as a city of art and culture. These are curated by a dedicated Art Concierge, who is an integral part of The Wellem’s concept.
The hotel’s own collection of paintings, collages, and photographs from the 20th and 21st centuries can be found in all areas of The Wellem Hotel. Yet, unlike in a museum, the artworks here are integrated into daily life, allowing their emotional power to have an even more subconscious effect. In the restaurant, in Düsseldorf’s living room, along the corridors, and within the suites and studios, they are part of the overarching concept and simultaneously become an element of the interior design.
What the frame is to a painting, space is to sculptures. They engage in all directions, guiding thoughts into new dimensions through their form and materiality. The Wellem Hotel presents a small collection of limited editions by internationally renowned artists. Some of the exhibited pieces are miniatures that can be viewed in their original size in the NEW SCULPTURE PARK.
The owners of The Wellem Hotel have re-dedicated the former park of industrialist Dr. Konrad Henkel and his wife, art lover Gabriele Henkel, into a unique sculpture park. Hotel guests and friends of the house receive access by appointment to this secret garden of art, featuring works by Erwin Wurm, Tony Cragg, Julian Schnabel, and other outstanding contemporary artists.
The photographic works permanently displayed in the studios and suites are by artist HA Schult, internationally known for his object and action art. The photo series “Action Blue” showcases fascinating crystalline structures. However, this is merely the documentary outcome of a project spanning over a year, which took the artist from Paris to Beijing.
With its own Art Concierge, The Wellem Hotel has established a new institution bridging art and space. The Art Concierge not only curates the collection and current special exhibitions but also offers art tours tailored to individual needs, arranges private viewings, facilitates personal meetings with artists, and advises interested parties on purchasing artworks or building their own collection.
