In the spirit of Jan Wellem, who gave the hotel its name, THE WELLEM continues his work as a collector, patron and mediator of art. The hotel’s location between the famous Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf and the K20 of the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen also makes it a hotspot for culture enthusiasts. The hotel’s own collection of originals and limited editions by world-renowned artists throughout the hotel, changing exhibitions and its own cultural events all contribute to Düsseldorf’s reputation as a city of art and culture. They are curated by a dedicated art concierge, who is an integral part of THE WELLEM’s concept.
The hotel’s own collection of paintings, collages and photographs from the 20th and 21st centuries can be found in all rooms of THE WELLEM. But unlike in a museum, the pictures here hang in the midst of life, allowing their emotional power to have an even more subconscious effect. In the restaurant, in Düsseldorf’s living room, in the corridors and in the suites and studios, they are part of the overall idea and at the same time become part of the design furnishings.
What the frame is for a painting, the space is for sculptures. They work in all directions and lead thoughts into new dimensions through their design and materiality. THE WELLEM hotel has a small collection of limited editions by internationally renowned artists. Some of the exhibits on display are miniatures that can be viewed in their original size in the NEW SCULPTURE PARK.
The owners of THE WELLEM hotel have transformed the former park of industrialist Dr. Klaus Henkel and his wife, art lover Gabriele Henkel, into a unique sculpture park. Guests and friends of the hotel can access this secret garden of art by appointment, with works by Erwin Wurm, Tony Cragg, Julian Schnabel and other outstanding contemporary artists.
With its own Art Concierge, THE WELLEM hotel has established a new institution between art and space. The Art Concierge not only curates the collection and current special exhibitions. He offers art tours tailored to individual needs as well as private viewings, arranges personal meetings with artists and advises interested parties on purchasing a work of art or building up their own collection.
